“My enthusiasm for the natural world and my desire to find solutions to challenging environmental issues drew me to this subject.”

– Steve Rosas

In this exclusive interview, know more about Steve Rosas of Omega Environmental Services and his commitment towards environmental solutions, innovation, and leadership within the industry.

TWB: Could you describe your initial experiences working as an environmental consultant? What initially intrigued you to this subject of study?

SR: An internship at a nearby environmental firm marked the beginning of my early experiences in the environmental consulting field. My enthusiasm for the natural world and my desire to find solutions to challenging environmental issues drew me to this subject. My early exposure to real-world situations strengthened my resolve to pursue this job.

TWB: During the course of your 26-year career, what environmental difficulty have you faced the most, and how have you handled it?

SR: In overseeing a reconstruction project with vapor intrusion difficulties from a previous dry cleaner, I encountered the most environmental obstacle. We gained the trust and support of community groups by involving them early on and outlining the hazards. We created a remediation strategy in open communication with regulatory bodies to safeguard public health, and we finished the project on time and within budget.

TWB: You made reference to the significance of interacting with regional authorities and communities. Could you give more details about how establishing trust with stakeholders has affected the results of your project?

SR: For a project to be successful, developing trust with stakeholders has proven essential. For example, early and open contact with the community and regulatory agencies during the vapor intrusion project helped us win their trust and cooperation, which was essential for the project’s successful completion.

TWB: What part do newly discovered pollutants like PFAS play in the projects you’re working on now, and how do you keep up with these changing environmental issues?

SR: PFAS and other emerging pollutants are a major focus of our ongoing projects. We keep ahead of the curve by investing in state-of-the-art technologies and regularly upgrading our knowledge to enable accurate and efficient assessments and remediation plans.

TWB: You have effectively overseen corrective action projects that were finished on time and under budget. Which crucial tactics do you employ to guarantee this kind of outcome?

SR: Thorough planning, utilizing cutting-edge technologies, and keeping lines of communication open with all stakeholders are critical tactics for finishing projects on time and within budget. For instance, our proactive strategy guaranteed legal compliance and a project free from legal problems during a retail center redevelopment in California.

TWB: In what ways can state-of-the-art technologies improve your capacity to deliver accurate and timely environmental assessments? Could you provide a sample of this in operation?

SR: Modern technology makes it easier for us to deliver accurate and timely environmental assessments. To swiftly determine contamination levels and create efficient remediation programs, for example, we employ sophisticated methods for soil and groundwater sampling.

TWB: How do you manage compliance in complicated regulatory contexts without sacrificing the momentum of your project? Could you give an example of a situation where this was essential to the project’s success?

SR: A thorough awareness of regulations and proactive contact with regulatory authorities are essential for navigating complex regulatory settings. Our capacity to navigate regulatory hurdles in the California retail center project ensured timely approvals and project success.

TWB: As Chief Operations Officer and President/Principal of your company, how do you balance leadership responsibilities with project management in large-scale environmental projects?

SR: Balancing leadership responsibilities with project management involves delegating tasks effectively and maintaining a clear vision for the company’s goals. My role as Chief Operations Officer and President/Principal allows me to oversee both strategic and operational aspects of the business.

TWB: How has your background in business and biological science education influenced the way you create marketing plans and manage day-to-day operations at your company?

SR: My approach to creating marketing strategies and business operations has been informed by my educational background in both business and biological science. It has given me a solid foundation in environmental consulting’s managerial and technical facets.

TWB: Looking back on your career, are there any awards, milestones, or accomplishments that you’re particularly proud of? How have these moments shaped your vision for the future of environmental consulting?

SR: One of the milestones I am particularly proud of is the successful remediation of a large industrial site, which earned us recognition from industry peers. These accomplishments have reinforced my vision for the future of environmental consulting, focusing on innovation and sustainability.
