– Eric Koenig

Eric Koenig, the founder of Twigs Paper, established his eco-friendly greeting card company with a focus on sustainability. The idea for Twigs Paper came from a hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where Eric’s appreciation for nature strengthened his resolve to merge business practices with environmental stewardship.

Originally from northern New Jersey, Eric’s experience in branding and design with nonprofits and businesses led him to address the waste produced by the paper and printing industry. Twigs Paper uses recycled materials to create greeting cards that reflect natural beauty and simplicity.

Know more in this exclusive interview.

TWB: Eric, could you tell us about your inspiration for starting Twigs Paper and why you decided to concentrate on sustainability in the greeting card business?

EK: After going on a hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I was motivated to start Twigs Paper since it reflected my environmental ideals. My aim was to demonstrate that trade and environmental preservation can coexist.

TWB: Your business made the early switch to biodegradable packaging and 100% recyclable materials. What were some of the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome throughout that shift?

EK: It was difficult to make the switch to 100% recycled materials and biodegradable packaging because it required more money and harder to find trustworthy suppliers. By forging solid bonds with environmentally conscious suppliers and informing our clients about the significance of sustainable practices, we were able to overcome obstacles.

TWB: You stated that Twigs Paper has more than 200 tons of CO2 offsets. Could you describe the procedures and methods you used to reach this incredible milestone for yourself?

EK: In order to offset more than 200 tons of CO2, we have to work with carbon offset programs and keep refining our production methods to lower emissions.

TWB: In what ways has including sustainability into your brand’s narrative aided in cultivating a devoted clientele, and how do your customers contribute to your environmental goals?

EK: By incorporating sustainability into our brand, we have been able to attract a devoted clientele that respects our environmental responsibility. By selecting our products and telling others about our environmentally responsible business methods, our consumers help us achieve our goal.

TWB: A percentage of Twigs Paper’s earnings are reinvested in regional conservation initiatives. Could you elaborate on the particular projects you’ve backed and the ways in which this strategy helps the community and your company?

EK: A percentage of our earnings is reinvested in regional conservation projects, like tree planting campaigns and programs to support environmental education. This strategy improves our brand reputation and fortifies our ties to the community, which is beneficial to our business.

TWB: The expense of sustainable techniques is frequently higher. How do you continue to be profitable and adhere to environmentally conscious values?

EK: Pricing techniques that appropriately represent the value of our sustainable products and prudent cost management are essential to maintaining profitability while adhering to eco-friendly ideals.

TWB: You have experience in design and branding. What impact did your past work with businesses and organizations have on Twigs Paper’s creative approach and environmental goals?

EK: My experience in branding and design, particularly with non-profit organizations, influenced Twigs Paper’s creative approach and sustainability objectives. I learned how important mission-driven branding and storytelling are from it.

TWB: Your enthusiasm for the environment has been greatly impacted by the scenery of New Hampshire. In what ways does the natural world still influence Twigs Paper’s designs and goals?

EK: Our designs and goals are inspired by nature. Our products remind people of the value of protecting the environment by reflecting the elegance and simplicity of natural settings.

TWB: What guidance would you offer to other business owners wishing to include sustainability into their business strategy, given the growing trend of consumers searching for purpose-driven companies?

EK: I suggest beginning with modest, significant adjustments for business owners who want to include sustainability into their business strategy, then expanding from there. Accuracy and transparency are essential for winning over customers.

TWB: In terms of product innovation, sustainability, and community involvement, what are your future objectives for Twigs Paper? Regarding the future, what kind of influence do you hope to have?

EK: A wider range of products, improved sustainability procedures, and greater community involvement are among our objectives for Twigs Paper. By encouraging environmentally conscious living and stewardship, we aspire to have a long-lasting influence.
