Mark Laurence Latowsky explores the intersection of art, synchronicity, and storytelling in his book House of Giral. His work examines interconnected themes through a layered narrative. In this interview, he discusses the creative process, influences, and the role of storytelling in shaping perspectives. Below is the full conversation.

Congratulations on winning a BREW book award! Can you share with us a brief overview of your award-winning book and what inspired you to write it?

House of Giral is a speculative psychological thriller about a journey to self discovery. Shown through the steely eyes of an orphan girl of Taurus cast at birth into that strange medical realism we call contemporary Floridian life. Little does she know that karmic retribution and synchronicity would have passed their unfinished business forward, from a past life she herself experienced when the Giral family made their home in 1920s Broward County. The book is a broader reflection on the dynamics of human power and loyalty, love, destruction and the enduring prospect struggle in pursuit of balance.

What elements of writing do you feel contributed most significantly to your book’s success in this regard?

Multicultural Interests and familial tendencies. Personal and Practical Experiences. Collaborating with the Right People. Wild Retirement Implications. Especially as they pertain to an undying Spiritual Quest towards Betterment of our Human Condition.

The BREW book awards emphasize literary quality and excellence in writing. What specific techniques or literary devices did you employ to ensure your book stood out in terms of craftsmanship and storytelling?

The short answer is finding the perfect fit. Teaching and Learning. Having a vision. Knowing how much you yourself can contribute. Being satisfied with your lot. Seeing it through, persisting in the face of defeat, to the bitter sweet final end. Not trying to reinvent the wheel. Searching for and delegating expertise to those who know much more than you do.

The BREW book awards celebrate books that offer unique perspectives or explore important themes. What do you hope readers take away from your book, and what message or theme were you most passionate about conveying?

There is an artistic spiritual flow and magnetic energy to the novel which takes you on a transformative journey. However an entirely complimentary storyline lives and crosses over lines of text, its medical nature weaving and reflecting its analytical path, that of its own forensic hope and joy. Its life breath requiring us, as authors perhaps, to watch and wait for emerging reader consciousness.

Writing a book often involves significant research and creativity. Can you share any interesting anecdotes or challenges you encountered during the writing process of your award-winning book?

So many involved synchronicities I could quite literally fill an entire book listing them all. From the Air Canada flight 137 that I took in 2023 to meet a friend in BC, to a real true to life unconscious yet known inspiration for the story of Jo. Whether this be karma, fate or dream knowledge transmission, clarification of understanding came in truth as after the fact knowledge gained in retrospect. The fictional names, places, faces, events and meanings percolating and brewing underneath Giral all having had their factual seeds and roots derived from real life identity characterizations.

The BREW book awards recognize excellence in various genres and styles. How do you think your book contributes to or challenges the conventions of its genre, and what sets it apart from other works in the same category?

Most great books work best when read backwards. Some might call it the alpha or omega effect. Emergence on the other hand brings to bare the third term lost but still linked in translation. In the fictional House of Giral lives a real actual psychopath. Medicine is as much an Art as it is a Science. What sets Giral apart must ever lie somewhere between the deficits posed by present day Psychiatry, and the balanced potentiality of a new Psychology.

As a BREW book award winner, your work is recognized for its outstanding quality. What advice would you offer to aspiring writers who are striving to achieve similar success and recognition in the literary world?

Show and speak what you know. Ask about all that you don’t. Write about familiar things, charged experiences. Know yourself and remain authentic to your hope dream wishes. Nothing is impossible or absolute. You can make a real difference in peoples lives if you have the will to persist. Most importantly, be happy with your lot, love the truth despite hardships and obstacles, be resilient and it shall set you free.

Winning the BREW book award can open doors to new opportunities and audiences. How do you plan to leverage this recognition in your future writing endeavors or literary career?

Perhaps a dream movie version of Giral should our house be blessed with such luck!

Finally, what’s next for you as an author? Are there any upcoming projects or ideas you’re excited to pursue following the success of your award-winning book?

I’m actively working on adapting Giral as a continuing medical educational tool to help improve physician patient communication making interpretation of human narrative storytelling an integral and dynamic part of the learning and teaching environments.
