“Poetry has the power to create a shared space for understanding, and I hope Unheard serves as a gentle reminder that healing and growth are always possible.”
– Bhavini Bhargava
Bhavini Bhargava’s debut poetry collection, Unheard, explores universal themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. Her work creates a space for connection through shared experiences. In this interview, Bhargava discusses the personal journey behind her writing, the challenges of confronting vulnerability, and how poetry contributes to understanding and social change.
Unheard has won the BREW Readers’ Choice Award September 2024 Book of the Month and 2024 Book of the Year, Books for Humanity Global’s Book of the Week, and the Spotlyts Story Award. How does it feel to have your debut poetry collection resonate with so many readers across the world?
It feels surreal and incredibly humbling. Knowing that Unheard has resonated with readers across the world is a validation of the emotions and experiences I poured into these poems. It’s a reminder of the universal nature of feelings like love, loss, and self-discovery, and I’m honoured that readers connected so deeply with the work.
You’ve mentioned that Unheard encapsulates your journey between the ages of fifteen and nineteen. What was the most challenging part of writing about such a personal time in your life?
The most challenging part was confronting emotions and memories that I had tucked away. Reliving moments of vulnerability and growth required honesty with myself, and sharing those moments demanded courage. But in doing so, I found a sense of catharsis and hope that others might find solace or understanding in my words.

Many of your poems deal with themes of love, loss, and mental health. How do you hope your readers will relate to these themes?
I hope readers see pieces of their own stories in mine. Whether it’s finding comfort during heartbreak, strength in moments of despair, or joy in self-discovery, I want them to know they’re not alone. Poetry has the power to create a shared space for understanding, and I hope Unheard serves as a gentle reminder that healing and growth are always possible.
The poem “My Worth” is especially empowering, and many have connected deeply with its message. Can you share the inspiration behind this poem and how it reflects your personal journey?
“My Worth” was born from a moment of self-reflection when I realized I had been measuring my value through external validations rather than my own beliefs and dreams. Writing it was a turning point where I chose to prioritize self-love and acceptance. It’s a celebration of reclaiming one’s identity and recognising that worth is intrinsic, not conditional.
Your poems touch on societal issues such as gender discrimination and mental health struggles. How do you see poetry contributing to social change, and what role does your work play in this conversation?
Poetry has always been a mirror to society, offering a platform to voice unspoken truths. Through Unheard, I hope to spark conversations around issues that matter—challenging stigmas, amplifying marginalised voices, and fostering empathy. Art, in any form, can inspire change by helping people see the world through a different lens, and I’m honoured to contribute to that dialogue.
As a six-time national-level badminton player and a student pursuing Sports Management, how do you balance your athletic career and writing? Do these aspects of your life influence each other?
Balancing both is a challenge, but they complement each other beautifully. Badminton teaches me discipline, focus, and resilience, qualities I carry into my writing. Similarly, writing offers me an outlet to process the highs and lows of being an athlete. Both pursuits require passion and perseverance, and I find joy in letting them coexist.
Sustainability, innovation, and diversity are key areas of global focus today. In your experience as both an athlete and an author, how do you see these values shaping the future of both sports and the arts?
In sports, sustainability is reshaping event organization, innovation is enhancing performance, and diversity is breaking barriers. Similarly, in the arts, these values are fostering inclusive narratives and environmentally conscious practices. As someone who bridges these worlds, I believe these shared principles can create a future where creativity and competition thrive hand in hand, driving both cultural and environmental progress.
Unheard is divided into seven sections, each exploring a different stage of life. Which section or poem holds the most personal significance for you, and why?
The section exploring self-acceptance is the most personal to me. It reflects a pivotal moment when I began embracing my flaws and strengths. Within that section, “Voice” holds a special place—it’s a reminder of how far I’ve come in finding and staying true to myself.
Your book includes illustrations that complement your poems beautifully. Could you share more about how you chose these visual elements and what role they play in enhancing the emotional impact of your work?
The illustrations are minimalist line art, chosen to amplify the emotions of the poems without overpowering them. Each piece was carefully curated to reflect the themes of its accompanying poem, creating a synergy between words and visuals. They add a layer of interpretation, inviting readers to experience the poems through both text and imagery.

Looking ahead, do you have plans for future projects—whether in writing, sports, or other areas? What can your readers and fans expect next from you?
Absolutely! In writing, I’m exploring themes for a second poetry collection, focusing on identity and belonging. In sports, I’m dedicating the next few years to advancing my career in cricket and the sports industry. Beyond that, I hope to blend these passions—perhaps by contributing to literature on sports or creating platforms that inspire others to pursue multifaceted lives.
