“As an attorney, I found that humor was an effective way to defuse adversarial relationships and reduce anxiety for clients.”
– Richard A. Danzig
Danzig has dabbled in writing in addition to his legal and creative endeavors. Facts Are Stubborn Things, his debut book, has been included on the BREW Readers’ Choice Award shortlist. Punch Line, his second book that looks into topics of corruption and social justice, has been awarded the BREW Seal of Excellence and will shortly be released. Danzig’s artistic pursuits are a reflection of his multidimensional approach to narrative, art, and law, all of which are based on his decades of experience.
TWB: Your recent novel, Punch Line, received the BREW Seal of Excellence. Can you share what the award means to you, and what inspired you to blend elements of law, comedy, and social justice in your writing?
RAD: The BREW award was the first review and award received for Punch Line pre-publication. The review was very insightful and was very meaningful to me. As an attorney, I found that humor was an effective way to defuse adversarial relationships and reduce anxiety for clients.
TWB: How do you believe your background as an attorney influences your storytelling, particularly in legal thrillers?
RAD: My novels are dialogue-driven and are rooted in my experiences with clients and in the courtroom. It allows me to give readers an insight into the challenges of practicing law.
TWB: In Punch Line, you tackle themes of identity and societal challenges. What message do you hope readers take away regarding these contemporary issues?
RAD: Punch Line is a novel about the dangers of intolerance. The law should afford protection for those who are discriminated against. Because of corruption, in my books justice is often only achieved outside the courtroom.
TWB: You founded the American Paralegal Institute and We The People. How have these experiences shaped your perspective on access to justice?
RAD: We The People was founded to provide access to the legal system to people who cannot afford an attorney and have been disenfranchised. It permitted customers to obtain legal documents and represent themselves in matters such as bankruptcies, uncontested divorces, and preparing a will.
TWB: As an artist, how do you think creativity plays a role in addressing serious topics like those explored in your books?
RAD: Painting and writing are very similar experiences. Artists say that their best work is when “God passes through the room.” There comes a time when the artist is just a vehicle for his art. At a certain point, my books write themselves.
TWB: Your character, Verne Slater, embodies the complexities of free speech and accountability. What inspired his development, and what do you think his story conveys?
RAD: I have always been a fan of comedians such as George Carlin and Jon Stewart, who confront hard truths with humor. The troubling attacks on comics based on their material inspired the Vene Slater story.
TWB: Can you discuss any milestones or recognitions in your career that you believe have significantly influenced your path as a writer and advocate?
RAD: As a newly admitted lawyer, I represented my father, who had suffered a stroke and then was denied medical benefits. I took the case to the highest state court in NY and eventually prevailed. Personally, it was the most important case of my career.
TWB: Diversity and inclusion are vital in today’s society. How do you approach these topics in your writing and artistic endeavors?
RAD: I try to approach diversity and inclusion by being honest about my struggle to understand the issues. Chance’s dialogue in Punch Line with his legal assistant, who is gay, was an opportunity to explore the LGBTQ+ community.
TWB: What advice would you give to aspiring authors who wish to incorporate social commentary into their work while maintaining engaging narratives?
RAD: The authors who have influenced me the most, like Elmore Leonard, Michael Connelly, and George Pelecanos, have dialogue-driven novels. I would recommend reading their books and seeing how their characters address social issues through the spoken word.
TWB: Looking ahead, what themes or issues do you feel are important to explore in your future projects, and how do you see your role in promoting them?
RAD: In the future, I intend to continue to address issues of corruption and disinformation, particularly the recent attempts to deny scientific facts and undermine the dedicated work of our scientists and government workers.
