“My early career experiences, from working at McDonald’s to serving as a phlebotomist and supply technician, were instrumental in shaping my resilience, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit.”
– Eronica Dew
Resilience, leadership, and a commitment to inclusion are not just attributes but cornerstones for success in the dynamic landscape of government contracting if not in all aspects of our lives. Eronica Dew, CEO and founder of BES Solutions Inc. (BESS), embodies these principles through a journey shaped by diverse career experiences and a steadfast dedication to service.
“My early career experiences, from working at McDonald’s to serving as a phlebotomist and supply technician, were instrumental in shaping my resilience, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit,” reflects Eronica Dew. These formative years set the stage for a career that spans military service, corporate leadership at Lockheed Martin, and now, as the head of her own thriving government contracting firm.
Eronica’s path to entrepreneurship wasn’t linear. It began with uncertainty after graduation, navigating new cities and diverse roles, including pivotal years in the U.S. Air Force, where she honed her mission-focused discipline. Her tenure at Lockheed Martin, managing multimillion-dollar contracts, further solidified her expertise in proposal management and government relations—a foundation crucial to launching BESS in 2018.
Founded with a vision to fill a gap in customer-centric government contracting, BESS has quickly become a trailblazer, securing over $13M in federal contracts as a prime contractor—a remarkable feat in the industry. Certified by the U.S. Small Business Administration as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business and Economically Disadvantaged Woman-Owned Small Business, BESS exemplifies Eronica’s commitment to excellence and equity.
Beyond her professional achievements, Eronica is deeply involved in her community, serving on the Board of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Prince George’s County and advocating for inclusive leadership. She balances her career with family life, cherishing her role as a mother and a mentor, driven by a desire to pave the way for underrepresented groups in business and government.

TWB: Can you share with us how your diverse range of early career experiences, from McDonald’s to phlebotomy, shaped the foundation of your journey to becoming the CEO of BES Solutions Inc.?
ED: Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, I faced significant challenges that shaped my resilience and determination. As a primary student, the government required school integration or busing in an attempt to diversify the racial make-up of schools in the United States by sending students to school districts other than their own. The school integration of Black students with white students was a difficult transition due to the race issues in the United States. The teachers at the new school were neither warm nor welcoming, and I was labeled as having reading disabilities, resulting in my placement in classes for students with learning disabilities. This experience alienated me and destroyed my confidence in learning.
Throughout middle and high school, this lack of confidence persisted. I didn’t strive to be valedictorian because I had internalized the negative perceptions of my abilities. Instead I found solace and a sense of achievement in sports, excelling in cheerleading and track, though my academic struggles often cut these activities short. Despite attending summer school each year, my academic performance remained a challenge.
My journey took a positive turn after high school. Marrying my high school sweetheart, who had joined the United States Air Force, and moving to California with him, opened a new world of possibilities for me. California had a more integrated society than my hometown in Louisville, Kentucky where racial tensions were seen and felt in everyday life. My first job at McDonald’s in 1992 introduced me to a peer enrolled in a Medical Assistant program at the National Education Center. Skeptical at first, I eventually enrolled and graduated at the top of my class in early 1993. This experience as a phlebotomist and medical assistant restored my confidence and sparked my desire for greater accomplishments.
Joining the Air Force in July 1993 as a supply technician further honed my leadership skills. However, I realized that many of my superiors lacked vision and a larger ambition. Determined to create the life I wanted, I pursued a bachelor’s degree, graduating debt-free thanks to my military service. Balancing my roles as a mother of five and supporting my husband’s military career, I maintained my dream of becoming my own boss.
In 2018, I founded BES Solutions Inc. (BESS), but it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 that I had the time to seriously pursue federal contracts, securing my first one that same year. When my youngest child graduated high school in 2021, I was able to fully dedicate myself to building and growing BESS.
My early career experiences, from working at McDonald’s to serving as a phlebotomist and supply technician, were instrumental in shaping my resilience, leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit. Each step, challenge, and achievement along the way laid the foundation for my journey to becoming the CEO of BES Solutions Inc.

TWB: In what ways did your time in the U.S. Air Force influence your leadership style, and how do those experiences contribute to the inclusive environment you foster at BES Solutions Inc.?
ED: Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in July 1993 was a pivotal moment in my life, driven by a determination to defy the negative feedback I had received growing up. When I shipped out to basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, in the sweltering summer heat, I was fueled by the voices of those who doubted me. The grueling training regimen, from early morning reveille to intense physical workouts under the scrutiny of drill sergeants, challenged me in every way. After weeks of being torn down and humiliated, the Air Force began to build me back up, instilling in me the values of military customs, discipline, and the mindset of a United States Airman.
Through this transformative process, I discovered my leadership niche. The Air Force mantra of “Integrity First, Service Over Self, and Excellence in All You Do” became the foundation of my leadership style. My approach is direct and to the point, with a strong emphasis on attention to detail and a commitment to excellence. This ethos earned me the right to operate autonomously in the organizations I supported, as I consistently demonstrated my ability to work diligently and effectively without the need for micromanagement.
However, I also learned that while companies often had strong structures, the people they hired to lead were not always suited for the role. I was repeatedly passed over for leadership opportunities due to my race, gender, and leadership style. Conducting myself with the same assertiveness as my male counterparts was not always well-received, and my abilities were often minimized because I was a Black woman. These experiences solidified my resolve to be my own boss and create a workplace where everyone is valued and respected.
As the CEO of BES Solutions Inc., I strive to foster an inclusive environment that reflects the lessons I learned in the Air Force. Having faced both unconscious and conscious biases, I lead with understanding, flexibility, and compassion. I recognize the unique challenges faced by working parents and aim to be a fair and supportive leader. At BESS, we prioritize integrity, service, and excellence, ensuring that all team members feel empowered and respected. My military training taught me the importance of building others up and creating a culture where everyone can thrive, regardless of their background or personal circumstances.

TWB: Being a trailblazer as a Black woman and a service-disabled veteran in your field, how did you tackle obstacles and pave the way for others facing similar challenges?
ED: As a military veteran and a Black woman, my journey has been marked by significant challenges and obstacles. Following my active-duty husband around the country, I never stayed in one place long enough to establish a mentor. After 10 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, I made the difficult decision to separate during the height of Operation Enduring Freedom to ensure the stability of our family. As a dual military family, one of us had to choose to separate to care for our five children. Shortly after my deployment to Kuwait in 2002, when my youngest was only six months old and my oldest was four, I chose to leave the service to provide a stable home environment.
This decision, though necessary, meant that I lost the continuity and support that a military career could offer. When I returned to work full-time, once my youngest child turned two, I couldn’t stay late to network and build relationships because my responsibilities at home took precedence.
As I got serious about BES Solutions Inc., there was no established network or mentor to guide me. Despite my experience in business development and proposal management, I found myself navigating uncharted waters alone. People were not forthcoming with information on how to start and maintain a business, and I lacked the mentorship and guidance that could have eased my journey. This determination and drive, however, fueled my resilience. I have made numerous mistakes along the way but have also learned from each one. My perseverance paid off, and I successfully won four large federal contracts as a prime contractor, totaling more than $13 million, within the first three years of my business.
Tackling these obstacles was not easy, but it has made me passionate about paving the way for others facing similar challenges. At BES Solutions Inc., I strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment, recognizing the importance of mentorship and guidance. I actively seek to mentor others and provide the information and support that I lacked. I share information and my experiences freely on my social media channels and on the BESS website and I keep my phone on, regularly answering questions from the community I’ve intentionally built. By sharing my experiences and lessons learned, I hope to empower others to overcome their obstacles and achieve their goals.
My journey has taught me that success is possible even in the face of significant challenges. As a trailblazer, I am committed to breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for others, ensuring that they have the support and guidance they need to thrive.

TWB: Could you recount a pivotal moment in your career where resilience played a significant role in overcoming adversity?
ED: A pivotal moment in my career where resilience played a significant role in overcoming adversity was during my tenure as a Program Manager for a $26 million subcontract at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in Washington, DC. As a Black woman with a background in military leadership, I was accustomed to a direct and decisive style of management, which was necessary in the Air Force where quick decisions could be a matter of life and death.
However, transitioning to corporate America presented a new set of challenges. My leadership style, which was effective and respected in the military, was perceived as too abrasive by some employees who preferred a more nurturing approach. While this direct style was often accepted in male leaders, it was admonished when exhibited by a Black female. Despite my proven capabilities, I faced skepticism and doubt, both from the prime contractor and some of my own staff.
At 32 years old, with a young family at home, I took on the role of managing this significant contract. The position was typically reserved for a retired military officer, and as an enlisted airman who left the service as a Technical Sergeant (E-6), I was seen as an underdog. I was frequently met with comments questioning my ability to lead such a substantial operation, especially in a field that required expertise in both logistics and communications.
The adversity I faced was formidable. To prove my capability, I worked 16-hour days for two years, establishing operations and managing six warehouses that supported WRAMC. This contract was critical, serving America’s veterans, wounded warriors, and their families. Despite the doubts and personal attacks, I persevered, leveraging my background in logistics and quickly learning the intricacies of communications and electronics.
Through resilience and relentless effort, I not only met but exceeded expectations. I grew the scope of the contract from 81 to 95 full-time employees and ensured the smooth operation of a complex logistical and communications network. My ability to adapt, learn, and lead effectively under pressure demonstrated my capacity to overcome significant challenges.
My performance in this role was so successful that it led to my transition into business development, where I could further leverage my skills and experience. This pivotal moment in my career laid the groundwork for my eventual turn to business ownership, taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability, and reinforced my commitment to breaking down barriers and paving the way for others facing similar challenges.

TWB: Establishing BES Solutions Inc. from scratch is quite an achievement. What motivated you to embark on this journey, and how did you overcome hurdles along the way?
ED: Establishing BES Solutions Inc. from scratch has been a fulfilling journey, driven by both my professional experiences and personal determination. My breaking point in leaving corporate America came while leading federal bid and proposal efforts for a large government contractor. After nearly a decade in another company’s business development department, I was recruited by a former colleague who recognized my expertise and called me to join his new company.
Upon joining, I found the company lacked critical processes for winning federal deals, such as a structured win plan process, proposal templates, and effective color reviews. Drawing from my extensive experience, I developed writing templates, win plan instructions, and processes. I also trained desktop publishers, graphic artists, and color reviewers on how to provide value-added feedback to solution architects and engineers for proposals. My efforts significantly improved the company’s federal win rate and led to securing major deals.
Despite these successes, when the proposal director resigned, I was overlooked for the promotion. Instead, the company promoted a woman I had trained, who joined two years after me and utilized the win plans and templates I created. This woman was white, and I am Black. Her promotion over me, despite my proven track record and contributions, highlighted the persistent barriers I faced as a Black woman in a male-dominated field. This decision not only overlooked my qualifications but also the substantial improvements I brought to the company’s proposal operations.
This experience became the catalyst for my decision to leave and start my own company. I realized that I had paid my dues and excelled in corporate America, yet systemic biases still held me back. I knew I had the skills, knowledge, and drive to succeed on my own terms.
Starting BES Solutions Inc. was not without its challenges. We created BES Solutions, Inc. (BESS) in 2018 and at first, I used BESS as a consulting business, working for other small and large businesses as their proposal manager, leading them to win federal deals. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and we were at home and able to focus, it felt like the right time to start directly going after federal contracts. The money I earned as a proposal consultant and our family’s savings helped us bankroll ourselves for the first three years in business as banks initially denied us a line of credit. After turning my attention away from consulting full-time in 2020 to search for contract opportunities, we won our first contract in 2020 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for $2.9M, another contract in 2021 with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for $1.6M, another contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for $2.8M, and a direct award with FAA for $5.79M. In August 2023, M&T Bank reviewed our Profit & Loss (P&L) Statements and Balance sheets and offered us a line of credit. Since then, we have been able to use our capital to scale the business, opening a second office, hiring a CPA, Accountant, and marketing firm, and attending conferences to position our firm for sustainable growth and success. Most importantly, we relieved our stress by getting the funding we needed to run our business and make payroll.
My motivation to establish BES Solutions Inc. stemmed from a desire to create an inclusive and equitable business environment where talent and hard work are recognized and rewarded. Overcoming the hurdles of bias and underestimation in corporate America only strengthened my resolve to pave the way for others facing similar challenges. Today, BES Solutions Inc. stands as a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of breaking down barriers for future generations.

TWB: Your commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace is evident. How do you embed these values into the fabric of your company culture at BES Solutions Inc.?
ED: At BES Solutions Inc., fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace is more than a commitment; it’s a core value that shapes every aspect of our company culture.
One of the fundamental ways we embed these values is through open communication. I make it a priority to regularly talk with our employees, clients, and corporate team. This continuous dialogue ensures that everyone feels heard and that we can address any issues promptly and effectively. By maintaining an open-door policy, we encourage transparency and trust within our organization.
I also believe in the importance of learning from our experiences. I keep detailed records of lessons learned from dealing with employee matters and use these insights to improve our practices continuously. This proactive approach helps us to address potential issues before they become significant problems and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.
Updating our employee handbook is another critical aspect of how we stay current and politically correct, ensuring inclusivity for all. We review and revise our policies regularly to reflect changing times and social norms. This ensures that our guidelines are not only up-to-date but also promote a workplace where everyone can thrive regardless of their background.
My personal journey as a product and, at times, a victim of social disadvantage has also shaped my leadership approach. For instance, in February 2019, while working as a Senior Proposal Manager, I faced significant challenges. Despite my contributions, such as developing winning processes that led to multimillion-dollar contract awards, I encountered systemic bias. My efforts were overshadowed by less qualified individuals who were promoted over me due to their race and gender. This experience of being marginalized despite my achievements highlighted the need for a workplace where merit, not bias, dictates advancement.
When I started BES Solutions Inc., I wanted to ensure that no one in my company would face the same barriers I did. We have implemented fair and transparent processes for promotion and recognition, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to advance based on their skills and contributions. We celebrate diversity and strive to create a supportive environment where all employees feel valued.
My leadership is also rooted in a deep understanding of the challenges faced by working parents. Having raised five children while managing a demanding career, I recognize that working parents are often unfairly punished for not being able to attend work events or for needing to prioritize their children’s needs alongside their professional responsibilities. This firsthand experience has taught me the importance of creating a supportive and accommodating work environment. At BES Solutions Inc., I strive to ensure that our policies reflect this understanding by promoting work-life balance, offering flexible schedules, and fostering a culture where employees feel valued for their contributions, not penalized for their family commitments. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, I aim to empower working parents to thrive both at home and in their careers.
Furthermore, I recognize the importance of support and mentorship. Given my challenges in finding mentors during my career, I actively seek to mentor others within the company. This involves providing guidance, sharing my experiences, and helping employees navigate their career paths effectively. By fostering a culture of mentorship, we aim to empower our team members and support their professional growth.
Despite facing significant adversity, such as being blackballed from consulting work by my former company due to my race and gender, I remain committed to breaking down barriers. At BES Solutions Inc., we prioritize working with diverse suppliers and partners, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity not just within our company but also in our business relationships.
In conclusion, embedding diversity and inclusivity into the fabric of BES Solutions Inc. involves open communication, continuous learning, updated policies, fair promotion practices, flexibility, and a strong mentorship culture. By doing so, we create an environment where everyone can succeed and feel valued, driving our mission of breaking down barriers for future generations.

TWB: With your remarkable track record of securing federal contracts, what strategies have you employed to ensure success in a competitive landscape?
ED: Securing federal contracts in a competitive landscape requires a multifaceted approach that emphasizes both excellence in proposal writing and effective execution. At BES Solutions Inc., we have developed several key strategies to ensure our success in this arena.
First and foremost, writing a highly rated technical proposal that is both compliant and compelling is crucial. Our proposals meticulously address the requirements and evaluation criteria set forth by the government. We ensure that our solutions are clearly articulated, innovative, and demonstrate our deep understanding of the client’s needs. Equally important is pricing our proposals correctly. Competitive and realistic pricing is essential to winning contracts, and we carefully balance cost efficiency with delivering high-quality services.
However, winning the contract is just the beginning. Keeping the work and delivering on our promises is even more challenging. That’s why BESS places a strong emphasis on customer service and problem-solving. We prioritize preventive maintenance to lower our risk of missteps and ensure smooth operations for our clients. By proactively identifying and addressing potential issues, we build trust and long-lasting relationships with our customers.
As a small company, we remain agile and responsive. This agility allows us to make quick decisions on the spot, unlike larger companies with multi-level decision-making processes. Our ability to respond swiftly to client needs and changes in project scope sets us apart and enhances our reputation as a reliable partner.
Collaboration is another cornerstone of our strategy. At BESS, we actively seek opportunities to work with our competitors, whether in prime or sub relationships. I believe in the value of partnerships and teaming with other companies on deals. By doing so, we leverage complementary strengths and increase our chances of success. I’d rather secure a portion of a contract—whether it’s 10%, 20%, or 50%—than miss out entirely. This collaborative approach ensures that there is enough work for everyone and that we don’t always need to pursue deals or contracts with the government alone.
Our success in securing federal contracts at BES Solutions Inc. is built on a foundation of writing compliant and compelling proposals, maintaining excellent customer service, being agile and responsive, and fostering collaborative partnerships. These strategies enable us to thrive in a competitive landscape and continue delivering value to our clients.

TWB: Your active involvement in community organizations reflects your dedication to supporting underrepresented groups. Could you share more about why this advocacy work is essential to you?
ED: Advocacy work is deeply personal and essential to me. I am a product of intersecting, underrepresented communities, having navigated conscious and unconscious bias throughout my career and personal life. This lived experience drives my commitment to supporting others who face similar obstacles.
My journey has been filled with hard-earned knowledge and lessons. I have built a successful business from the ground up, managed a long and fulfilling marriage of 33 years, and raised a family of five as a military dependent. These experiences have equipped me with a wealth of insights that I wish to share. From executing a $2.1 million contract without any initial funding or line of credit to balancing the demands of work and family, I have accumulated a wealth of knowledge that could fill a book if time permitted.
Being active in underserved communities is my way of sharing this knowledge rather than keeping it to myself. I believe in the power of giving back and helping those who have been overlooked by society. When I was raising my children, my responsibilities as a working mother and wife left little time for socializing and building a professional network. Now that my children are young adults—some serving in the military as their father and I did, one in college, and another in trade school—I finally have the time to dedicate to giving back to my community.
This dedication is why I enthusiastically joined the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Prince George’s County, where I live and run my business, as well as the Prince George’s Chamber of Commerce, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, and was recently invited to join the BOW Collective (induction on June 4, 2024). My involvement allows me to share my knowledge, mentor others, and help create opportunities for individuals to build the lives they aspire to. By participating in these community organizations, I aim to provide the support and guidance that I often lacked during my own journey.
I am deeply committed to community involvement and ensure that BES Solutions, Inc. gets involved and participates in events that exemplify our company’s dedication to corporate social responsibility. We actively engage with our local community through various initiatives, including supporting the Prince George’s County Police department with back-to-school giveaways. Our recent contributions include donating essential school supplies such as spiral notebooks, pencils, and folders to children in need, fostering educational opportunities and supporting youth development. Additionally, we’ve participated in Toys for Tots programs, dedicating eight hours of volunteer time to selecting toy wish lists and bringing joy to underserved families during the holiday season. Moreover, we’ve actively engaged in fundraising efforts for local politicians, contributing over $4,100 to campaigns aligned with our community values. Our involvement extends beyond financial support, as we’ve dedicated over 100 hours of volunteer time to networking, joining boards, and supporting local initiatives that resonate with our personal and professional interests. I’ve also actively supported County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in her bid for the U.S. Senate, recognizing her potential to positively impact our community and to make history as the first Black woman elected to the Senate from Maryland. I am deeply committed to giving back and making a meaningful difference in the communities where we live and work.
Advocacy work is essential because it helps bridge the gap for those who, like me, have faced significant barriers. It is my way of ensuring that others have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. I am passionate about fostering a more inclusive and equitable society, and through my active involvement in community organizations, I strive to make a meaningful impact.

TWB: Balancing a thriving career with family life requires resilience and adaptability. How have you managed to strike this balance, and what insights can you offer to others striving for the same equilibrium?
ED: Balancing a thriving career with family life requires resilience, adaptability, and a strong support system. For me, this balance has been achieved through a combination of empowering my family, fostering independence, and relying on mutual support with my husband.
One of the key strategies I employed was raising my children to be critical thinkers. I did not raise them as robots; instead, I encouraged them to make their own decisions, providing guidance and advice when needed. This approach prevented me from becoming a hovering mom and empowered my children to learn from their decisions, whether good or bad. By allowing them to navigate their own paths, I equipped them with the skills necessary to live independently and confidently.
My husband of 33 years retired from the United States Air Force after more than 25 years of service. Recognizing that I had put many of my own desires and dreams on hold to support his military career, he wholeheartedly supported my transition to entrepreneurship. When he retired, he followed me back to the DC Metro area to help fulfill my dream of running my own business. His support has been instrumental in helping BES Solutions Inc. secure our certifications, balance our books, pay company taxes, and establish a strong foundation. He has been my trusted partner in getting the company off the ground, leveraging his experience as a recruiter in the Air Force for 16 years to lead our recruiting efforts on contract wins.
While I have led our business development, proposal writing, and pricing efforts, I would be remiss to say I did it all alone. My family’s support has been crucial, and they remain engaged as we continue to grow. Our goal is to expand to the point where we can hire additional staff, allowing my husband to retire from work for good. He has served our country well and has been and continues to be a tremendous asset to me and BES Solutions Inc.
The key takeaway from my experience is to equip your children to live and explore life independently, without feeling the need to live their lives for them. Empowering your children and spouse to be self-sufficient and supportive when needed creates a strong foundation for achieving balance. Encourage critical thinking and independence in your family and rely on mutual support to navigate the challenges of balancing career and family life.
Achieving equilibrium between a thriving career and family life is possible through fostering independence, empowering your family members, and relying on mutual support. By adopting these principles, you can create a harmonious balance that allows both your career and family life to flourish.

TWB: Looking forward, what are your aspirations for the future, both personally and professionally, and how do you plan to continue championing diversity and making a positive impact?
ED: Looking forward, my aspirations encompass both personal and professional goals, all rooted in my commitment to giving back and championing diversity.
Personally, I want to volunteer more and give back to my community. One of my key aspirations is to establish internship positions for underserved communities and college students. Business development, executing win plans, and creating value propositions are not typically taught in college courses; these are skills learned through hands-on experience in corporations. By creating these internship opportunities, I hope to bridge the gap and provide invaluable learning experiences for young individuals who might not otherwise have access to such knowledge.
Professionally, I aim to increase my visibility within my community and the broader commercial and federal industry. I want BES Solutions Inc. to be recognized as a trusted partner and teammate that government agencies and other companies can rely on, whether they need a subcontractor or a prime contractor. One of our significant goals is to gain a company facility clearance and, perhaps one day, support the intelligence community.
I plan to continue serve on various committees and boards wherever I can add value, as I have done as a board member for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce since January 2024. In The BOW Collective, I’ll be a part of the committee focused on government contracts. By joining other boards and committees, I can share my experiences, insights, and perspectives to help shape policies and practices that promote diversity and inclusivity. Building and nurturing relationships organically is essential to me, and I plan to invest time and effort in expanding my network and fostering meaningful connections.
To achieve these aspirations, I will continue to leverage my experiences and lessons learned throughout my career. I am committed to using my platform and resources to create opportunities for others and to champion diversity in every aspect of my work. By focusing on these goals, I hope to make a lasting positive impact on both my community and the industries I serve.
My future aspirations are centered around giving back, increasing visibility, and fostering diversity. Through volunteering, creating internship opportunities, serving on committees, and building strong relationships, I aim to make a significant and positive impact both personally and professionally.
