Notes from Luminescence Goh
Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect them. My journey is a testament to this, marked by a series of personal and professional challenges that seemed insurmountable at the time. However, through resilience, the unwavering support of loved ones, and a newfound passion for writing, I emerged stronger and more focused than ever.
The Darkest Hour
A few years ago, I found myself in a deep abyss. I had lost my job, my family was shattered by a painful divorce, and I was burdened with crippling debt. To make matters worse, I felt isolated, with no one to turn to for support—except for my two best friends and my brother. These were the darkest days of my life, a period when despair threatened to engulf me completely. One particular incident stands out vividly. It was a rainy evening, and I was sitting alone in my small apartment, surrounded by unpaid bills and legal documents from the divorce. The weight of my circumstances felt unbearable. In that moment of desperation, I called my brother. Without hesitation, he drove through the storm to be by my side. His presence, along with the steadfast support of my two best friends, reminded me that I wasn’t alone. This support network became my lifeline, offering me the strength to face each day.
Finding Solace in Writing
Amidst this turmoil, I sought a way to cope with my overwhelming emotions. I had always enjoyed writing, but it was during this period that it became more than a hobby—it became my refuge. Late at night, when sleep eluded me, I would pour my thoughts onto the page. Writing allowed me to express my fears, frustrations, and hopes in a way that was cathartic and healing. One evening, I began drafting a story that had been brewing in my mind for some time. It was a fantasy tale about a heroine named Seraphina, who, despite facing monumental challenges, finds the strength to protect her people and fight for justice. The act of creating Seraphina’s world and witnessing her resilience mirrored my own journey and provided a therapeutic escape from my reality.

Anecdotes of Support
The encouragement from my brother and friends was invaluable. I remember a particular day when I was overwhelmed by self-doubt, questioning my ability to ever find stability again. My best friend took me out for coffee, listened patiently, and then said something that stuck with me: “Your past doesn’t define you. What you do next does.” These words became a mantra that fueled my writing and personal growth.
The Transformative Power of Creativity
As I delved deeper into writing, I noticed a shift in my mindset. The process of building narratives and developing characters became a form of self-discovery. I realized that through my stories, I could explore my own struggles and triumphs, giving them meaning and context. This creative outlet helped me move from a place of despair to one of hope and possibility.
Expounding on Resilience
Through this journey, I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about never falling—it’s about rising each time you do. The support of my loved ones, coupled with the therapeutic power of writing, taught me that even in the darkest times, there is a way forward. My writing, which began as a way to release negative thoughts, has evolved into a passionate pursuit that continues to inspire and motivate me.
Takeaways
Today, as I reflect on my experiences, I am grateful for the challenges that once seemed insurmountable. They led me to discover the healing power of creativity and the importance of a strong support network. My story is one of transformation—from darkness to light, from despair to hope, and from silence to storytelling. Writing has not only been my refuge but also a bridge to a brighter, more purposeful future.
TWB: Congratulations on winning the BREW Fiction Book Excellence Award for “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate”! Can you share with us the inspiration behind this tale and its significance to you?
LG: “Thank you so much! Winning the BREW Fiction Book Excellence Award for “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” is a tremendous honour.
Inspiration Behind the Tale
The inspiration for “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” stems from a combination of my deep love for fantasy literature and my experiences during my service in the Navy. Serving in the military taught me the value of camaraderie, duty, and sacrifice, which are central themes in the book. Seraphina, the protagonist, embodies the qualities I observed in my fellow servicemen and women: bravery, integrity, and a profound sense of duty including those unsung heroes in the first line (medical unit, delivery personnel, police and fireman) during the pandemic period and nuclear station explosion event. Here, I am grateful and appreciate their unfailing support and extra mile. Thank you to all the First Line heroes for keeping us safe.
The enchanted world of the Vanguard reflects the complexities and challenges we face in the real world. By weaving in elements of magic and fantasy, I aimed to create a narrative that is both engaging and thought-provoking, offering readers an escape while also encouraging them to reflect on deeper issues.
Significance of the Story
This story is significant to me as it represents a fusion of my passions and my experiences. Through Seraphina’s journey, I wanted to highlight the importance of kindness, resilience, and working together towards a common goal. No matter who she is or where she comes from, she treats everyone fairly and with a self-sacrificing attitude to face any danger. The Divine Mandate in the book symbolizes a higher calling and the collective effort required to overcome great challenges, much like the teamwork and unity I experienced in the Navy.
Environmental Issues
In “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard,” the environmental issues are depicted through the degradation of magical lands and the imbalance of natural elements. These narrative elements serve as a metaphor for the environmental crises we face today, such as water pollution, and animal existence due to deforestation and poaching. In real life, no one or living thing complains to humans but Nature can only show a sign. In the novel, the species are forced to fight back and claim what belongs to them because of all these environmental issues. By showing how Seraphina and her allies strive to restore harmony to their world and discover the truth of the main course, I aim to inspire readers to take action to protect our environment. The story underscores the importance of sustainable practices and the impact of human actions on nature.
Social and Ethnic Responsibilities
The diverse cast of characters in the book reflects the rich tapestry of cultures and ethnicities in our world. Through their interactions and shared missions, the story promotes the idea of unity in diversity, Earth’s rights and harmony. It emphasizes that despite our differences, we all have a role to play in addressing social and global challenges. Seraphina’s pure and kind heart represents the ideal of empathy and understanding, crucial for bridging divides and fostering inclusivity.
In the novel, Seraphina and the elf are on a covert mission to stop the main cause of the calamity, and thus, they wish to remain hidden. Aboard their invisible aircraft, Seraphina peered down through the window and saw a group of civilians fleeing from a monstrous threat. Below, soldiers, nearly exhausted from their efforts to protect the panicked civilians, struggled to hold their ground. Tension rose within the aircraft as Seraphina argued with the captain. The captain, focused on their crucial mission, was adamant about not jeopardizing their objective. However, Seraphina’s resolve was unshakable. Her heart ached at the sight of the desperate civilians and the brave but weary soldiers. she declared, her voice firm and unwavering not to watch them suffer, Ignoring the captain’s protests, Seraphina made a bold decision. She leapt from the aircraft, determined to save the people below, her resolve as clear as her mission. This act which I learned from the newspaper about nurses working in the hospital during SARs and the COVID period.
Using Fantasy to Convey Real-World Issues
Fantasy stories, with their vivid settings and compelling narratives, have a unique power to mirror real-world issues and encourage reflection. By placing these themes in a fantastical context, readers can explore complex topics in a more accessible and engaging way. Seraphina’s journey is a testament to how courage, kindness, and cooperation can drive positive change, mirroring the real-life efforts needed to tackle environmental and social challenges.
Through “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate,” I hope to not only entertain but also inspire readers to reflect on their roles in making the world a better place. Whether it’s through small, everyday actions or larger societal efforts, each of us has the potential to contribute to a more harmonious and sustainable future.”

TWB: Your novel tackles themes of friendship, valor, sacrifice, and hope amidst environmental crises. How do these themes reflect your personal values and experiences?
LG: The themes of friendship, valor, sacrifice, and hope in “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” are deeply reflective of my values and experiences, particularly those shaped during my time in the Navy.
Friendship
Friendship is a cornerstone of the novel, just as it has been in my life. In the Navy, the bonds formed with fellow servicemen and women are incredibly strong, built on trust, mutual support, and shared experiences. For instance, in the Navy, friendships are forged in the crucible of shared challenges and unwavering camaraderie. During a tense deployment, our ship’s exhaust system malfunctioned, threatening the mission’s success. Despite fatigue and pressure, my fellow servicemen rallied around me. Together, we labored tirelessly, grease-streaked and determined, to fix the exhaust trunking. Each wrench turn echoed our shared commitment to one another and the mission. In those moments, trust deepened, mutual support flourished, and bonds were cemented in the crucible of adversity. This experience exemplified the profound strength and resilience of Navy friendships, enduring long after the exhaust smoke dissipated. These relationships often become a source of strength and resilience. In the story, Seraphina’s friendships play a crucial role in her journey, highlighting the importance of unity and the power of standing together in the face of adversity. In my point of view, “True friends are those you can rely on no matter what. The ones that walk into the wilderness to locate you and return you home. And true friends never have to remind you that they are your friends.”
Valor
Valor, or courage in the face of danger, is another significant theme. My military service taught me the true meaning of bravery—it’s not the absence of fear but the will to push through it for a greater cause. This idea is embodied in Seraphina’s character as she confronts various challenges and dangers. Her bravery inspires others and demonstrates that courage can lead to transformative change, both in the enchanted world and in our own.
Sacrifice
Sacrifice is an integral part of military life and is portrayed vividly in the novel. The willingness to put the greater good above personal interests is a value I hold dear and one that is essential in both the military and in addressing global issues like environmental crises. In the book, characters often make significant sacrifices to protect their world, reflecting the real-world need for selflessness in the fight against environmental degradation and social injustices. Amidst intense physical trials, one of our comrades twisted an ankle, jeopardizing our team’s success. Without hesitation, we halted our progress, offering our shoulders for support as we carried him through the remainder of the course. Though it meant slower times and added strain, our unity prevailed. This act of sacrifice not only strengthened our bond but also underscored the unwavering commitment to each other’s well-being that defines military brotherhood.
Hope Amidst Environmental Crises
Hope is perhaps the most poignant theme in the novel, especially in the context of environmental crises. During my service, I saw firsthand the impact of human activities on the environment and the urgent need for change. For instance, I saw a pool of oil spill in the sea and stained our ship while the fish have covered with the black crude oil. In my thinking, the fish will dead of no oxygen as the gill is cover with oil stain. This experience fueled my desire to write a story that not only entertains but also inspires hope and action. Seraphina’s journey is a beacon of hope, showing that even in the darkest times, there is potential for renewal and restoration if we work together and remain committed to positive change.
Personal Reflections
These themes are not just literary devices but are reflective of my core beliefs:
- Friendship and Community: The importance of building strong, supportive relationships that can withstand the test of time and adversity.
- Valor: The courage to face challenges head-on and to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult.
- Sacrifice: The understanding that true progress often requires personal sacrifices and putting the needs of others before our own.
- Hope: A steadfast belief in the possibility of a better future, driven by collective action and unwavering commitment.
By embedding these values into “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate,” I aimed to create a narrative that resonates on a deep level with readers, encouraging them to reflect on their values and the roles they can play in addressing the critical issues of our time. The novel is a call to action, a reminder that through friendship, courage, sacrifice, and hope, we can overcome even the greatest of challenges. A pivotal moment in my life came during a period of intense personal turmoil. I had lost my job, my family was torn apart by divorce, and I was drowning in debt. On top of that, I felt utterly alone, with no socialized friends to lean on—except for one best friend and my brother, who stood by me through it all. This was my darkest hour. Despite the overwhelming despair, the unwavering support of my friend and brother, combined with spiritual guidance, became my lifeline. Their encouragement and belief in me provided the push I needed to keep going. During this challenging time, I turned to writing as an outlet. What began as a way to release my negative thoughts and emotions soon transformed into a cherished hobby. Crafting stories allowed me to channel my pain into creativity, helping me to heal and find a new sense of purpose. This version maintains the emotional depth of your experience while improving the flow and clarity of the narrative.

TWB: The journey of Seraphina and her team spans various terrains and confronts internal struggles. How did you approach crafting such intricate character dynamics and settings?
LG: Crafting the intricate character dynamics and varied settings in “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” was a deeply personal and deliberate process, drawing heavily from my diverse life experiences, academic background, and creative imagination.
Drawing from Navy Life
During my time in the Navy, I encountered people from various races, cultures, and linguistic backgrounds. This multicultural environment enriched my understanding of teamwork, communication, and the beauty of diversity. The camaraderie and unity among the crew, despite our differences, profoundly influenced the relationships and dynamics among Seraphina and her team. Each character in the novel represents a facet of the diversity I experienced, bringing unique strengths and perspectives to the group. The trust and reliance we built in the Navy are mirrored in the bonds between Seraphina and her allies as they navigate their journey.
Internal Struggles and Personal Growth
Serving in the Navy also involved significant internal struggles, such as coping with the pressures of duty, being away from family, and facing the unknown. These personal challenges informed the internal conflicts of my character. Seraphina’s journey is not just a physical quest but also a profound personal transformation, reflecting the emotional and psychological growth I experienced. Her battles with self-doubt, fear, and the weight of responsibility parallel the real-life struggles of military service and personal development.
Environmental Awareness
My study of environmental science at university provided a solid foundation for the environmental themes in the novel. Understanding the impact of human activities on the environment, the importance of conservation, and the complexities of ecological systems allowed me to weave these issues seamlessly into the story. The degradation of magical lands in the novel serves as a metaphor for real-world environmental crises, highlighting the urgency of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
Staying Informed and Creative
Daily news reports from TV and social media kept me informed about global events, environmental disasters, and social issues. This constant flow of information helped me create a world that, while fantastical, remains relevant and reflective of contemporary challenges. The novel’s settings, from lush forests to desolate wastelands, are inspired by real-world places and events, giving readers a sense of familiarity and urgency.
Childhood Daydreams and Creative Evolution
From a young age, I often found myself daydreaming about heroes saving the world from calamities. This imaginative escape became a fertile ground for my creative thinking. As I grew older and my understanding of the world deepened through education and life experiences, these daydreams evolved into more structured and meaningful narratives. The fantastical elements in the novel are rooted in these childhood dreams but are enriched with a more mature and informed perspective.
Crafting Character Dynamics and Settings
Creating the intricate character dynamics and varied settings involved several key steps:
- Character Development: Each character’s background, personality, and motivations were meticulously crafted to reflect the diversity and complexity of human nature. Their interactions and growth are influenced by their unique experiences and the collective challenges they face.
- Setting Creation: The settings were designed to be vivid and immersive, drawing inspiration from real-world environments and my imagination. The contrasts between different terrains—lush forests, barren deserts, mystical mountains—serve to enhance the narrative and challenge the characters in unique ways. I also take some idea from some places of interest such as Mount Faber, Pulau Ubin, some Asian temples and old ruins in Europe.
- Themes Integration: Environmental awareness and social responsibility are woven into the fabric of the story. The characters’ struggles to restore balance to their world mirror the real-life efforts needed to address environmental and social issues.
- Plot Structuring: The plot was carefully structured to balance action, character development, and thematic depth. Each event and obstacle is designed to test the characters and push them towards growth and realization.
By combining my personal experiences, academic knowledge, and creative imagination, I aimed to create a rich and engaging story that not only entertains but also inspires readers to reflect on their roles in the world. “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” is a testament to the power of diversity, the importance of environmental stewardship, and the enduring strength of hope and unity.

TWB: As an author proficient in three languages, how does your multicultural background influence your writing style and storytelling techniques?
LG: Being proficient in English, Chinese, and the Hokkien dialect has profoundly influenced my writing style and storytelling techniques, enriching my narratives with a unique multicultural perspective. Here’s how my multicultural background shapes my work:
Language and Expression
Nuanced Language Use:
- English: Offers a vast vocabulary and a flexible structure, allowing for detailed and expressive descriptions. It’s the primary language of my writing, providing a universal medium to reach a broad audience.
- Chinese: Contributes a rich tapestry of idioms and metaphors. The conciseness and depth of Chinese expressions enable me to convey complex emotions and scenes with fewer words.
- Hokkien Dialect: Adds an authentic and intimate layer to dialogue, especially when portraying characters from specific cultural backgrounds which tell my dialect and origin. It brings a sense of realism and connection to the story. In the novel, there is one part where I use Hocken dialogue in the English tense, praising an aircraft saying, “No horse run”. It means “incomparable and in a league on its own”.
Storytelling Techniques
Cultural Narratives and Themes:
- Chinese Folklore and Mythology: Growing up with tales of legendary heroes, mythical creatures, and moral lessons, I often infuse my stories with elements from Chinese folklore. This adds depth and a sense of wonder to the narrative.

- My characters often reflect a diverse cultural background, embodying traits and philosophies from different traditions. This diversity adds realism and relatability to my characters, making them more multi-dimensional.
- The settings in my novels are inspired by a fusion of various landscapes and architectures I’ve encountered. For instance, a city might combine elements of traditional Chinese pagodas with the bustling streets of a modern metropolis, creating a unique and immersive world.
Themes and Values
Universal Themes with Cultural Nuances:
- Themes like friendship, valor, sacrifice, and environmental awareness are universal, but my multicultural background allows me to explore these themes through different cultural lenses. For instance, the concept of sacrifice might be depicted through the lens of filial piety in Chinese culture, adding a layer of cultural specificity to a universal theme.
- Environmental awareness in my stories is often inspired by traditional Chinese respect for nature and harmony, blended with modern ecological concerns, creating a narrative that resonates with contemporary issues while rooted in cultural heritage.
Cross-Cultural Communication
Dialogue and Interaction:
- The way characters speak and interact often reflects their cultural backgrounds. I use my knowledge of multiple languages to craft dialogue that feels authentic and culturally appropriate, enhancing the believability and depth of character interactions.
- Code-switching, or the use of multiple languages within a single conversation, can also be a powerful tool to convey cultural identity and relationships between characters.
Personal Growth and Perspective
Empathy and Understanding:
- My multicultural background fosters a deep sense of empathy and understanding, allowing me to portray characters from diverse backgrounds with sensitivity and authenticity. This helps in creating more inclusive and representative stories.
- It also allows me to address social and ethnic responsibilities more effectively, portraying the complexities of cultural identity and the importance of unity amidst diversity.

By integrating these elements, I aim to create stories that are not only engaging and imaginative but also reflective of the complex, interconnected world we live in. My multicultural background enriches my writing, allowing me to craft narratives that resonate with a wide range of readers while offering a unique and authentic voice.

Assisting in the Family Furniture Business

This skill is invaluable in creating multi-dimensional characters with relatable motivations and emotions. For instance, we need to listen to what a customer wants and serve heartedly.

This authenticity adds a layer of credibility to my narratives, resonating with readers on a deeper level. Learning to drive, I nervously navigated the streets, my heart racing as I drove onto the main road from the car park. Meanwhile, on TV, a nurse, exhausted yet determined, meticulously tended to a COVID-19 patient, her masked face a picture of resilience amid the chaos of the pandemic-stricken hospital.

This blend of fantasy and authenticity aims to resonate with readers and inspire them to reflect on their own lives and the world around them.

TWB: “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard” is your first English-language novel. What motivated you to transition from writing Chinese novels to English, and how did you navigate this transition?
LG: Transitioning from writing Chinese novels to creating “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard” as my first English-language novel was motivated by several factors and was facilitated by my extensive background in learning and using English throughout my education and professional life. Here’s how and why I made this transition, along with the steps I took to navigate it effectively.

This journey not only broadened my audience but also enriched my storytelling, making “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard: Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” a novel that bridges cultures and resonates with readers worldwide.

TWB: Your novel emphasizes the battle between light and darkness, echoing the complexities of human nature. How do you balance these opposing forces within your narrative, and what message do you hope readers take away?
LG: In my novel, the battle between light and darkness mirrors the complexities of human nature. I balance these opposing forces by depicting characters and scenarios that reflect my journey through depression and loss. When I was at my lowest, having lost my marriage, business, job, and social friends, I found myself engulfed in darkness. This period was marked by the betrayal of so-called friends, who turned their backs on me when I needed them most, becoming villains in my life.
However, I transformed my negative thoughts into positive ones, gradually walking out of depression. It started when I found a message on a YouTube channel that lifted my spirits. It said something like: “Absence of thoughts opens the heart and mind, let the obstacle clear itself as it is nothingness.” From then on, I meditated, prayed, listened to peaceful music, and wrote a book to alter my negative thoughts. This transformation is central to my narrative, illustrating that light can emerge from the darkest of times. By portraying characters who struggle with and overcome their inner demons, I aim to show readers that resilience and hope can triumph over adversity.
The message I hope readers take away is that even in the face of profound betrayal and despair, it is possible to find strength within oneself and rise above the darkness. True friends and inner light will eventually prevail, guiding one toward healing and new beginnings.

TWB: Can you tell us about your creative process and any challenges you encountered while writing “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate”?
LG: Certainly! My creative process for writing “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” was both intricate and deeply personal, marked by several challenges and moments of profound inspiration.
- Inspiration and Conceptualization: The initial idea for the story emerged from my own experiences with personal loss and transformation. I wanted to explore the themes of light and darkness, reflecting my journey through depression and the betrayal of close friends. This foundation gave the story a raw authenticity that resonated with the complexities of human nature.
- Character Development: Creating characters was a cathartic process. Seraphina, the protagonist, embodies resilience and the capacity to find light in the darkest of times, mirroring my path to recovery. Developing her character and those around her—both allies and adversaries—required me to delve into my encounters, transforming real-life figures and relationships into rich, multidimensional characters.
- Plot Structure: Balancing the narrative between the forces of light and darkness was a significant challenge. I wanted to ensure that the plot didn’t just oscillate between extremes but instead portrayed a realistic journey of struggle and growth. This involved intricate plotting and numerous revisions to maintain a cohesive and engaging story arc.
- Writing and Rewriting: Writing the novel was an emotional endeavor. There were moments when revisiting certain themes, especially those related to betrayal and loss, was particularly painful. However, these moments also fueled my writing, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative. Rewriting was crucial to refine these elements and ensure that the story remained hopeful despite its darker moments.
- Overcoming Personal Challenges: One of the biggest challenges was managing my mental health while writing about such intensely personal experiences. It was a delicate balance between using my writing as a therapeutic outlet and not letting it overwhelm me. I found solace in the creative process itself, often taking breaks to gain perspective and ensure I was nurturing my well-being.
- Message and Themes: Through “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate,” I aimed to convey a message of hope and resilience. The battle between light and darkness within the story serves as a metaphor for the internal struggles we all face. I hope readers take away the understanding that even in the depths of despair, it’s possible to find inner strength and emerge stronger.
In summary, writing “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” was a journey of self-discovery and healing. The challenges I encountered—both personal and creative—shaped the narrative, making it a testament to the power of resilience and the enduring human spirit.

TWB: Beyond entertainment, what impact do you hope your novel has on readers, particularly in fostering empathy, resilience, and a sense of unity?
LG: Beyond entertainment, I hope “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” catalyzes profound personal reflection and societal change. Through the themes of empathy, resilience, and unity, I aspire to evoke empathy in readers by inviting them to step into the shoes of characters who grapple with adversity and betrayal. By fostering empathy, I encourage readers to develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of human nature and the struggles faced by others.
Furthermore, I hope the narrative of resilience portrayed in the novel inspires readers to find strength within themselves, even in the darkest of times. By witnessing Seraphina’s journey from despair to empowerment, readers may feel empowered to confront their challenges with courage and resilience.
Additionally, “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” emphasizes the importance of unity in overcoming adversity. Through the diverse cast of characters who come together despite their differences, I hope to convey the message that solidarity and cooperation are essential in facing shared challenges. By highlighting the power of unity, I aim to inspire readers to cultivate connections and support networks within their communities.
Ultimately, my goal is for “Seraphina and the Divine Mandate” to not only entertain readers but also provoke thought, spark conversation, and catalyze positive change. I hope that the novel leaves a lasting impact by fostering empathy, resilience, and a sense of unity among its readers, both individually and collectively.

TWB: Looking ahead, do you have any upcoming projects or aspirations in the literary world that you’d like to share with your readers?
LG: Absolutely! I’m thrilled to share some exciting projects on the horizon.
Firstly, I’m diving into the creation of a sequel to “Chronicles of the Enchanted Vanguard.” Building upon the rich world and compelling characters established in the first book, this sequel will explore new adventures, challenges, and revelations. Additionally, I’m embarking on a deeply personal endeavor: chronicling my journey as a writer. This book will delve into the triumphs, struggles, and invaluable lessons learned throughout my writing career.
