“Being in a wheelchair is clearly challenging, and maintaining my physical health and mental health is extremely important.”
– Andy McErlean
Human resilience is the remarkable capacity within each of us to adapt, overcome, and thrive in the face of challenges. It is the inner strength that allows individuals to bounce back from difficult circumstances, grow through adversity, and emerge stronger than before.
At its core, resilience is not merely about enduring hardship; it is about finding meaning, purpose, and growth in the midst of setbacks. It involves harnessing one’s inner resources, such as optimism, determination, and perseverance, to go through life’s ups and downs with grace and courage. It is a dynamic process that can be cultivated and strengthened over time through various experiences, including facing and overcoming misfortunes, learning from failures, and building supportive relationships. It is not about avoiding tribulations but about developing the skills and mindset to confront it head-on and emerge transformed.
Throughout history, there are those individuals who have demonstrated remarkable tenacity in the face of unimaginable challenges, from surviving natural disasters and personal tragedies to overcoming systemic oppression and injustice. Their stories serve as powerful reminders of inner strength. One such story is that of Andy McErlean, a former soldier whose life took an unexpected turn after a road accident while serving in Germany. From the depths of despair to the pinnacle of triumph, Andy’s journey exemplifies the power of determination, and the unwavering human spirit.
A Soldier’s Sacrifice
Andy McErlean was in the service of his country as a vehicle mechanic attached to 32 Armoured Engineers. However, his promising career was abruptly interrupted by a life-altering road traffic accident, leaving him with significant injuries and a long road to recovery. “I was injured in a road traffic accident while serving in Germany. After surgery, I was flown back to RAF Warton and then transferred to Salisbury spinal unit,” says Andy about that new beginning in his life.
Rediscovering Purpose Through Sport
Things were different before the accident. “Before I was injured, I was extremely sporty – played tennis, rugby, athletics, etc.” recounts Andy. However, the accident left him grappling with newfound uncertainties. “Being in a wheelchair is clearly challenging, and maintaining my physical health and mental health is extremely important.”
Yet, amidst the darkness, Andy found solace and purpose through sports, particularly wheelchair tennis. He continues his story, “Initially, after my accident, I just wanted to be able to get out and about and learn how to live independently. As time went by, I explored possible wheelchair sports. I did the Portsmouth half marathon with a friend, and the biggest impact was being introduced to wheelchair tennis.”

Triumph on the Court and Beyond
As Andy went deeper into wheelchair sports, he discovered a world of possibilities and opportunities. From winning international tournaments to representing his country at prestigious events like the Invictus Games, Andy’s journey was marked by triumphs both on and off the court. His determination served as a source of inspiration not only for fellow athletes but for individuals facing their own struggles.
In his own words, “I was able to travel around the world and played in tournaments, some of the highlights were winning the NZ mixed doubles, national champion twice in doubles and being a member of the world team cup in Paris, but to be honest the important part was being in the wheelchair community and making good friends. I also played basketball for a local team which I thoroughly enjoyed as I have always loved being part of a team. Both of these sports enabled me to get involved with the Invictus Games in 2014 and 2016. This was an incredible experience, and I was fortunate enough to win two gold medals and a silver medal. I was really proud to represent my country at this event.”

Beyond Sports: Impacting Lives and Making a Difference
Andy’s journey extended beyond the realm of sports, encompassing his involvement with organizations. Through these endeavors, Andy not only found avenues for personal growth and fulfillment but also made a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether it was scuba diving with fellow veterans or skiing as part of his rehabilitation, Andy’s journey was defined by a spirit of camaraderie, perseverance, and service.
“Over the years I have also been heavily involved with the charity BEWSA which has enabled me to travel to America to compete in the PVA games and it was with them that I learnt to scuba dive. Being able to swim in the sea and dive was awe-inspiring and something that I will never forget. The Not Forgotten Society have also supported me as part of my rehab. They have enabled me to do lots of events such as skiing and partake in out of bound activities such as abseiling,” Andy goes on with his story.
More Triumphs
“Clearly, I am getting older, and my joints hurt more than they used to!” Andy admits. Yet, he has no plans to stop as he cites, “A dear friend of mine had started Pickleball and encouraged me to partake. I absolutely love the sport. Its fast, great fun and a sport I want to continue to pursue. Last year, I entered the national pickleball championship in Bolton, which I was fortunate enough to win.”
The Role of Support and Innovation
Central to Andy’s journey was the unwavering support of his family, friends, and the broader community. Andy expresses his gratitude, “Since my injury, it is wonderful to see how many more opportunities there are for newly injured people. I would thoroughly encourage newly injured paraplegics to pursue as many opportunities as they possibly can so that they can see what will aid them in their recovery. The work that the hospitals do, and the charities involved are absolutely invaluable in this whole process.” Their encouragement and belief in his abilities fueled his determination to overcome trials and pursue his dreams.
Additionally, the role of innovative solutions like the Stiltz lift in enhancing accessibility and independence within his home environment cannot be overstated. Andy acknowledges these technological advancements served as catalysts for his continued growth and empowerment as he narrates, “Last year, we started to renovate our house and basically future-proof our home. We wanted to ensure that I could easily get upstairs. In the past we had a stair lift, but it always meant extra transfers and leaving a wheelchair upstairs. My wife saw a Stiltz lift on DIY SOS, and we were both immediately impressed by it. Not only was it functional and versatile, but it also looked really nice. (We have had so many people comment on how good it looks!)
Everyone we contacted throughout the process was extremely helpful and not at all pushy at all which was also important. It is very quiet and easy to use, but it has enabled me to be completely independent at home. If I now forget something upstairs, I don’t think twice about popping in the lift to collect it. It was also useful when we were moving heavy items upstairs as we could put them inside. We have two dogs, and it is extremely safe for them, too. It has a safety cut-off, but the dogs have actually been great around it! I get a lovely greeting every time I come downstairs!”

A Testament to the Human Spirit
In the face of adversity, Andy McErlean is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. From the depths of despair to the heights of triumph, he embodies the resilience, courage, and determination that define true champions. Through his journey, Andy inspires us to persevere in the face of challenges, to embrace opportunities for growth and transformation, and to believe in the power of the human spirit to overcome even the greatest of obstacles. His secret: support. “All of the opportunities I have had, along with the support of my family and friends, have been invaluable,” he reveals. ⭐
