Game: Minecraft, Mojang

Record: Best-Selling Videogame of All Time

Minecraft is an all-time favorite for both adults and children alike. Its blocky graphics and open-ended play have endeared it to millions all over the world. Described as an online LEGO, Minecraft has dethroned Halo and achieved the title of the best-selling videogame of all time. As of 2023, 300 million copies of the game have been sold worldwide. Software developer, Markus “Notch” Persson came up with Minecraft in 2009. In 2014, Persson left Mojang Specifications and Microsoft took over. Since then, Microsoft has been developing the gameplay of Minecraft.

Game: Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

Record: Most Critically Acclaimed Video Game Ever

Developed by Nintendo (JPN), Legend of Zelda: The Ocarnia of Time was released on November 23, 1998. Since then, it has been loved by almost everyone who has got their hands on it. The game has received the best ratings from all critics. In fact, it is the first game ever that has received 40 out of 40 from Famitsu, the most acclaimed Japanese videogame magazine. It is also worth noting that it is the cornerstone of modern adventure gaming, being the first 3-D game to enter Nintendo’s action-adventure series.

Game: Dance Dance Revolution (Konami 1998)

Record: First Video Game Recognized As An Official Sport 

Developed by Konami, Dance Dance Revolution was released in Japan in 1998 and in North America and Europe in 1999. This game series is the first of its kind. It introduced the rhythm and dance genre in video games. Also known as DDR, Dance Dance Revolution became an official sport under the name machine dancing in Oslo, Norway, on December 9, 2003. Game: Scarface: The World is Yours (Sierra, 2006)

Record: Most Swearing in a Videogame    

Based on the 1983 film of the same name, Scarface: The World is Yours is an action-adventure videogame that was released in 2006. The game is short. It is only fifteen hours long. However, even with such a short duration the videogame has the maximum number of swear words. In fact, out of the 31,000 lines of dialogue, the f-word is uttered 5,688 times. In addition to this, there are many other instances of curse words.

Game: Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar Games)

Record: Fastest Videogame to Gross $1 Billion     

Grand Theft Auto V not only became the bestselling videogame in 24 hours but also the fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion dollars in a mere three days. Developed by Rockstar Games, the multiple-record-holding game continues to make waves by being a bestselling game even today. It is no surprise that gamers all over the world are eager for the release of Grand Theft Auto VI

Game: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (Konami, 2008)

Record: Longest Cutscene in a Videogame      

Cutscenes have a polarizing appeal. While some love the non-interactive film-ins that explain the story between gaming levels, others often prefer to skip them. Nevertheless, cutscenes are a significant part of any modern day videogame. Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots holds the record for the longest single cutscene at twenty-seven minutes. It also boasts of four individual scenes in the finale that add up to a whopping total of seventy-one minutes.
